I’ve been asking myself, “What will it require of us all as we join the Greater Cleveland Congregations?” and the answer seems to be “commitment.” Membership in GCC will not be, in the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, cheap grace. It will ask various members of the Community of St. Peter to give time and effort in various ways as the need arises.
During the past year I’ve noticed the GCC working mainly in two areas. These examples may help us to see what might be expected of us going forward. Education where they have focused energy on first understanding and then working to
improve and support the transformation plan of Mayor Jackson for the public schools of Cleveland. Some members from many of the GCC congregations studied, discussed, and then discerned their best judgment about the plan. Then many members of all congregations have been asked at strategic points to contact legislators in Columbus to nudge the legislation along.
Criminal Justice where GCC focused energy on the primary election for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor this spring. Again certain members from congregations lent their expertise and study to the related issues and then hundreds of members of all congregations turned out for a forum where candidates were challenged to respond to a series of prepared questions that addressed the issues GCC discerned as important for the next Cuyahoga County Prosecutor.
This is not a timid group. Once they have studied an area, they do act. Hopefully the Community of St Peter can lend GCC both the study, expertise, and wisdom of some members and then, when needed, the voice and presence of many members.
As we begin our involvement in GCC, there will be several opportunities in coming weeks for face‐to‐face discussion here at CSP. The first of these will be an informal (hopefully outdoor) supper at the Ford’s on June 24.
If you would like to be kept informed about the progress with these new initiatives or would like more information in the meantime, please email CSP_GCC@att.net. If you have already participated in GCC activities, or are a member of Catholics for GCC, we would particularly like to hear from you.
